Portugal's Michelle Larcher De Brito celebrates her 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6) victory over second seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the Aegon Classic second round in Birmingham yesterday.

Defending champion Ana Ivanovic double-faulted on match point on the way to losing to qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito in the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham yesterday.

The second seed, who reached the French Open semifinals this month, lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (6) to the Portuguese player ranked 128 places lower in the WTA list.

Larcher De Brito is best known for knocking Maria Sharapova out in the second round of Wimbledon two years ago.

Earlier, the other former world No. 1 from Serbia, Jelena Jankovic, survived two tie-break set points against Casey Dellacqua, the world No. 67 from Australia, before coming through 7-6 (11), 6-3.

The grasscourt event features a strong field this year, including world No. 3 Simona Halep of Romania who defeated British wildcard Naomi Broady 6-4, 6-2 to reach the third round.

Former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka is also playing along with Canada's Eugenie Bouchard as she tries to recover some form in time for Wimbledon where she reached the final last year.

In London, French seventh seed Gilles Simon ended Thanasi Kokkinakis's emotional Queen's Club debut with a 6-4, 6-2 second-round Aegon Championship victory over the Australian teen yesterday.

Kokkinakis has spent much of this week in the air after making the long flight back to Australia to spend a day at home with his sick grandmother before an unscheduled return to Queen's.

The highly-rated world No. 70 had jetted back to Adelaide to be with his family after the French Open, only to discover on landing that he had been offered a wildcard entry into the Wimbledon warm-up event in west London.

Kokkinakis got back on a plane, shrugged off the inevitable jet-lag and captured his first tour-level win on grass on Tuesday when he came from a set down to defeat France's Jeremy Chardy.

But the 19-year-old, one of only four teenagers in the top 100, can now take a well-earned rest and catch up on some sleep after being brushed aside by Simon.

Meanwhile, Kevin Anderson pulled off a surprise victory over French Open champion and second Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland.

The big-serving South African edged out a closely-fought 7-6 (4), 7-6 (11) victory.
