China competed its first Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid, New York, in 1980. China has won a total of 53 medals, including 12 gold, in previous Winter Olympic Games.

Chinese speed skater Ye Qiaobo became the country's first Winter Olympics medalist at the 1992 games in Albertville, France, when she won silver in both the 500- meter and 1,000- meter speed skating-races.

China won its first Winter Olympics gold medal at Salt Lake City in 2002 when Yang Yang broke the woman's 500- meter short track speed skating world record.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, three more gold medals were added to China's tally, pulling the country past South Korea to rank first among Asian countries. Eight of the Chinese medalists at Sochi were born after 1990, a sign of China's growing potential in winter sports.

Here are some of the landmarks of China's Winter Olympics history.
