Editor's note: Over the past few decades, China has made major breakthroughs in competitive sports as many athletes have gained new ground in events that the country has traditionally been weak in like tennis, swimming and track and field while defending its strongholds of diving, gymnastics and table tennis. Let's take a look at some of the Chinese athletes who have made history in fierce sport competitions.

Chinese swimming star Ning Zetao made history by becoming the first Asian swimmer to win the blue riband event as he clocked an impressive 47.85 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle at the Swimming World Championships in Kazan, Russia on August 6, 2015.

Ning Zetao, Asia's new 22-year-old sprint king, celebrated his Asian Games gold at Incheon where he became the first swimmer from the continent to break the 48 second barrier in the 100m freestyle.
