Li Weifeng, together with Li Tie, was sent to Everton in 2002 as part of a sponsorship deal. Making only one league appearance, Li failed to impress and returned to China months later.

Li went abroad again in January 2009 and chose an East Asian club to start over. Unlike his flop in Britain, his two-seasons with South Korean K-League side Suwon Samsung were a hit. The center back was shortlisted for the league's Best XI in 2009.
