Gilberto Silva believes the time is right for Arsene Wenger to leave Arsenal.

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva says it is sad to hear people talk about Arsene Wenger's position at the club after all the good things he has done for the Gunners over the past two decades.

"When everyone talks about whether it's time for Arsene to stay or go, it's so sad for me to hear it, especially after all he has done for football, all he has built around him and around the club," the Brazilian said.

"The club is now at a much different level (thanks to Wenger). I hope he finds the best both for himself and for the club. The club will decide when is the right time for him to leave."

Silva spoke to Shanghai Daily while he was in the city this week to promote the 2017 International Champions Cup China, during which Arsenal will take on Bundesliga side Bayern Munich on July 19 in Shanghai.

"It's tough to see them struggling this season," Silva said of his beloved Gunners. "There is no miracle. The only way is to work hard and try to change the situation. I hope they get this inspiration because they have a lot of games in front of them."

Silva, described by Wenger as one of the best "holding midfielders", joined Arsenal from Brazil's Atletico Mineiro in 2002. He left in 2008, and played for Greek club Panathinaikos and Brazil's Gremio before returning to Atletico Mineiro. He retired in 2015.

"I was fortunate enough to be playing with some big names," said Silva. "Of course the team has changed from that time. The style of play has also changed. But it doesn't mean that the club doesn't have players."

Silva spent most of his professional career in South America and Europe, while a number of his younger compatriots are seeking a career in Asia. Hulk, Oscar and Elkeson have become the core trio of local Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG. They are at the same time well paid by the state-owned company backed club.

"What has happened at the moment in China is something similar to what happened to Japan, to Qatar," said Silva. "They tried to do the same to attract players with big amount of money. I hope this can give hope to the country's league, too.

"The clubs should make sure the foreign players give what they have, and help the local players develop, including how to face difficult times and how to handle pressure."

Talking about Oscar, who joined SIPG from Chelsea on a 60-million euro (US$73.2 million) deal, Silva said he believed the 25-year-old made a decision after thorough consideration.

"I truly believe that Oscar had some other choices with some big teams in Europe," said Silva. "I cannot say that he is wrong (to come to China) after receiving a huge offer. Money speaks this time as he came at such a young age. As a professional football player, you have to be open, to listen and make a decision. I am sure he made the decision that suits him better, and I hope he enjoys his stay here."
