A research report on China’s winter sports industry was issued recently in Beijing, underlining the opportunities brought about by the 2022 Winter Olympics to the ongoing process of the coordinated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province.

The paper indicates that China’s winning bid and preparation for the winter games, through infrastructure construction, resource allocation and environmental protection, will boost the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

The 2022 games, which will be hosted by Beijing and take place in venues in the capital as well as in Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province, will also encourage as many as 300 million Chinese to engage in winter sports and increase competitiveness of Chinese athletes, the paper says.

In 2016, around 11.33 million people engaged in skiing, with men showing slightly higher interests in the sport than women, the paper says.

The number of Chinese skiers only accounts for 10 percent of the world’s market but is quickly increasing, making the country the largest potential market for the winter sport industry, according to the paper.

If the rapid development trend continues, the number of Chinese going skiing will hit 100 million by 2022, the paper says.
