Twelve gold medals are up for grabs on the first day of the Olympics. And China has its chance at the very first event happening this (Saturday) evening Beijing time -- the women's 10 meter air rifle.

Two previously medalled Chinese athletes are in the competition. Jin Shurong won the gold at the 2012 London Olympics and Du Li at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Chinese women's volleyball team will face the Dutch tonight (Saturday) at about 10 pm. The team decided to not attend the opening ceremony in order to prepare for the game.

Also happening tonight Beijing time is basketball -- the Chinese men's team will meet the US, while the women's team will face Canada. The Chinese women's soccer is also slated to play against South Africa.
