 Hong elects to step down.

South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo resigned on Thursday for his team's disappointing performance at the World Cup.

South Korea was out of the World Cup for finishing last in Group H. Its record included a 1-0 loss to Belgium, a 4-2 defeat by Algeria and a 1-1 draw with Russia.

Hong told a televised news conference that he was "deeply sorry" for the results.

Hong, captain of the South Korean team that reached the 2002 World Cup semifinals, coached the country's under-23 team to the bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.
