Top-seeded Lin Dan, who won the Japan Open last weekend, beat Japan's Nakanishi Yosuke 21-17, 21-15 for a first-round victory.

The world number one faced tough attacks from his Japanese rival and edged to a narrow four-point victory in the first set.

The two shuttlers played head-to-head in the second set and tied at 12-all. Lin began to turn the tables by scoring two points in a row and finished off with 21-15.

Lin's teammate Bao Chunlai had an easier match against Hsieh Yu-Hsing of Chinese Taipei.

Fourth seed Bao eliminated Hsieh by winning 21-9, 21-9.
