Former world champion Valeriu Calancea of Romania has been banned for two years for a positive testing for an anabolic steroid, the Romanian Weightlifting Federation (FRH) said on Monday.

"Calancea failed a dope test for methandienone at the 2007 worlds in Chang Mai, Thailand," said FRH president Nicu Vlad. "His second sample was also positive."

Calancea, 27, was a double winner at the 2003 world championships in Vancouver and was a medal hope for Romania at the coming Beijing Olympics.
