Born in 1949, Haruki Murakami is a Japanese writer and U.S. literature translator. The writer was inspired to continue his writing career after his first novel "Hear the Wind Sing" in 1979 became a hit. He has won a great number of awards, including the Franz Kafka Prize and Jerusalem Prize. The Guardian praised him for being "among the world's greatest living novelists."

His most popular fictions include "Norwegian Wood," "Dance Dance Dance" and "Kafka on the Shore," among many others. His fifth novel, "Norwegian Wood" in 1987, has sold more than 7 million copies, creating a Haruki Murakami phenomenon. It's this nostalgic book on youth, love and loss that earned him great fame in China. His engaging "1Q84" series became a bestseller worldwide.
