The Olympic torch relay started during the controversial 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Carl Diem, the secretary-general of the Olympic Organizing Committee created the torch relay as a propaganda tool for the Nazis, aiming to show off the Aryan superiority to the rest of the world. The torch relay passed through multiple countries, including Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Hungary and Czechoslovakia.
