   Philadelphia (US)

Philadelphia is one of the first mainstream Hollywood films to acknowledge HIV/AIDS, homosexuality, and homophobia. Andrew Beckett and Joe Miller are two young lawyers in Philadelphia. Andrew is not open about his homosexuality at the law firm, nor the fact that he has AIDS. However, his boss finds out this secret and fires him. He believes that he was the subject of discrimination and wants to sue his boss. Therefore, he asks Joe to take his case. Despite winning the case, he dies from his battle with AIDS. The film won Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Tom Hanks) and Best Original Song. The film called on people to care about AIDS infections and raise public awareness of the disease.
