Areas: Central America (particularly Honduras and Nicaragua), Yucatán Peninsula, South Florida

Fatalities: 19,325 at least

Damage: US$6.2 billion (1998 USD)

Hurricane Mitch is reportedly the deadliest hurricane ever recorded in U.S. history. It formed in the western Caribbean Sea on October 22, and rapidly evolved to Category 5 status, with maximum sustained winds of 180 mph (285 km/h).
