Speedtest.net, a website that tests and compares consumer download speeds around the globe, has updated its rankings of Internet speed in 186 countries and regions in the world.

Millions of recent test results show, from May 28, 2011 – Nov. 26, 2013, Hong Kong boasted the fastest internet access, with a rolling mean of 71.03 Mbps, followed by Singapore and Romania.

Mbps, which stands for megabit per second, is a unit of data transfer.

The United States, the country that invented the Internet, didn't make it to the top 10 list. Thirty countries and regions have faster Internet than America, including ones that are hardly known for being technological powerhouses, such as Moldova and Uruguay.

Taiwan outperformed the overwhelming majority and squeezed onto the top 10 list. The Chinese mainland ranked 43rd.

The calculation of the Internet speed of the top 10 countries and regions were based on at least 100,000 unique IP addresses for a given country/region.

Speedtest is powered by Ookla, a company that makes applications for broadband testing and Web-based network diagnostics. Its Internet speed test is claimed to be the world's most popular test of the kind and its solutions have been adopted by nearly every Internet Service Provider globally.

Let's have a look at the 10 countries and regions with the fastest Internet.
