The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018 has recently been released and lists the top 1,000 universities from 77 countries in the world.

The rankings were based on performance of research-intensive universities across all of their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, and enables students to explore higher education options and compare universities around the world.

A total of 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators were used to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons.

The top 1,000 were selected from the 20,000 higher education institutions in the world and for the first time the list was led by two U.K. universities.

Overall, European institutions occupy half of the top 200 places, with the Netherlands and Germany joining the U.K. as the most-represented countries. Italy, Spain and the Netherlands all have new number ones.

The continued rise of China is another notable trend. The country is home to two universities in the top 30. In contrast, two-fifths of U.S. institutions in the top 200 have dropped places.

The following are the top 30 universities in the world.
