It is a 632-meter, 128-story skyscraper in Lujiazui, Pudong New Area. It is the world's second-tallest and China's tallest building to its architectural top. The construction of the building was completed in March 2016.

It shares the record of having the world's highest observation deck at 562 meters with the Ping An Finance Center in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. It also has the world's second-fastest elevators at a top speed of 20.5 meters per second after losing the title to the Guangzhou CTF Finance Center in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.

The Shanghai Tower, the Jin Mao Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center constitute the Lujiazui skyline as seen from the Bund.
