Editor's note: Following the release of data by the National Bureau of Statistics of China regarding China's economic performance in 2020, various cities have subsequently announced local annual economic reports.

Shanghai and Beijing remained the only two cities with a total GDP exceeding 3 trillion yuan in 2020, with growth rates reaching 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively. Shenzhen's GDP grew by 3.1% to reach 2.77 trillion yuan ($429 billion), placing it third among Chinese cities. Wuhan, the city hit hardest by COVID-19 last year, announced a higher than expected economic performance. The city's full-year GDP shrank only 4.7% to 1.56 trillion yuan ($241.9 billion), a huge increase from the negative 40.5% growth demonstrated in the first quarter of last year and helping it retain its place among the top 10 Chinese cities ranked by GDP.
