The Golden Bauhinia Square was built in commemoration of Hong Kong's return to the motherland. On July 1, 1997, when the HKSAR was established, the central government sent it a golden bauhinia statue as a gift, to symbolize their hope that the city enjoys everlasting prosperity. The statue was placed in the square next to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. A grand flag-raising ceremony is held here every year on the anniversary of the HKSAR's establishment and China's National Day.
