III. Structural Analysis of Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies

1. Banking, ferrous metal smelting and pressing, and coal mining industries had the largest number of companies join the list.
Companies on the list from banking, post and telecommunication, and petroleum and natural gas extraction and production industries hailed the largest amount of total profits.
The 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies represented 62 industries. Fifteen companies from the banking industry were on the list, 7.5 percent of the total. These 15 companies earned operating revenue of 1,894.1 billion yuan and profits of 460.1 billion yuan. Twelve companies from the ferrous metal smelting and pressing industry joined the list, 6 percent of the total. Their operating revenue hit 1,038.3 billion yuan. Their profits reached 36.3 billion yuan. Twelve companies from the coal mining industry entered the list, 6 percent of the total. Their operating revenue added up to 745.1 billion yuan. Their profit reached 75.4 billion yuan. These 39 companies, representing 19.5 percent of industries on the list, made profits of 517.8 billion yuan, accounting for 40.15 percent of total profits of the 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies.
The top three profitable sectors were banking, post and telecommunication and petroleum and natural gas extraction and production, achieved profits of 460.1 billion yuan (by 15 companies), 121 billion yuan (by three companies) and 112.9 billion yuan (by three companies) respectively. In total, these three companies earned profits of 694 billion yuan, 48.73 percent of the total profits of the 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies. See Table 4-2 for more detailed statistics.
2. The headquarters of the 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies were mainly in the east of China.
The headquarters of the 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies were located in 27 provinces, autonomous regions or municipalities. 153 companies had their headquarters in the east of China, 76.5 percent of the total; 25 in the central area in China, 12.5 percent of the total; 15 had headquarters in the west, 7.5 percent of the total, and seven in the northeast, 3.5 percent of the total.
Areas that have the largest number of companies on the list are all in the east. They include Beijing (64 companies), Guangdong (19), Shandong (19), Shanghai (16), Jiangsu (12) and Zhejiang (11). The number of firms from these provinces and municipalities hit 141, accounting for 70.5 percent of the whole. Total profits of companies in the regions reached 896.9 billion yuan, 120.1 billion, 50.8 billion yuan, 114.9 billion, 33.7 billion and 29.7 billion respectively. Their total profits reached 1,246.1 billion yuan, accounting for 87.51 percent of total profits for the 200 companies listed. See table 4-3 for details.
3. The majority of firms on the list are state-owned and state-holding companies.
In terms of the ownership structure of the 2010 Top 200 Most Profitable Chinese Companies, 148 of them are state-owned or state-holding companies accounting for 74 percent of the total, while the other 52, or 26 percent of the total, are privately-run. See table 4-4 for details.
