A Shanghai tourist has drowned while swimming in Thailand, Thai police said on Monday.

The 27-year-old man was swimming near Ko Samet Island resort around 11am local time on Friday when he was swept away by rough seas, according to police.

The man, who was on a chartered ship with friends before the tragedy, was already dead by the time he was pulled from the sea.

This latest incident comes after a speedboat carrying 27 Chinese tourists exploded near Phi Phi Le Island in Thailand on Sunday, injuring 16.
