The 5th Sichuan International Travel Expo (SCITE) opened in Leshan city, Sichuan on Sept 7. Sichuan governor Yin Li and vice governor Yang Hongbo attended the opening ceremony.

Having been hosted in Leshan, home to the beautiful Mount Emei, for five years in a row, the event has been gaining increasing popularity. This year more than 3,000 attendees from 58 countries and regions will be participating in the expo.

With the theme of better life and better travel experience, the expo will encompass trade shows, forums and tourism product contest.

More than 600 exhibitors will showcase their products at the exhibition area that covers 35,000 square meters. A total of 18 projects, worth a combined 64.47 billion yuan, are expected to be signed during the event. 150 pairs of tourism enterprises will be provided with the opportunity for one-on-one business dialogues. Several forums including the Emei Global Summit will focus on subjects such as tourism and poverty alleviation, tourism talents and tourism big data.

Seven dedicated exhibition areas will highlight boutique travel, unique travel experience in China, and especially in Sichuan, tourism-related cultural and creativity products, and outdoor tourism experience.

The expo has been deepening cooperation with industry organizations including the World Tourism Organization, the Pacific Asia Travel Association, ASEAN-China Center, and the China Tourism Association for multilateral exchange.

Chris Bottrill, president of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, was among the celebrities speaking at the opening ceremony. The China Tourism Association helped organize the 2018 tourism product contest that focuses on Chinese elements, outstanding entries of which were awarded at the opening ceremony and will be on display at a dedicated exhibition area during the expo.

Nepal, this year's guest country of honor to the expo, sent a delegation led by its tourism minister Rabindra Prasad Adhikari to discuss cooperation in tourism, culture, education and agriculture.

The neighboring province of Shaanxi and Bazhong city in northeast Sichuan will be promoted as the “theme province” and “theme city” at the expo, thanks to a new promotional campaign launched this year.

To attract visitors, the expo organized domestic travel agencies to present special offers including travel routes and room rates. Art performances and intangible heritage demonstrations will also be staged during the event.

The expo is scheduled to run till Sept 9.

As the host province of the expo, Sichuan has been attaching great importance to the development of tourism industry in recent years. Data shows that in the first half of 2018, the province has realized tourism revenue of 527.15 billion yuan, up 15 percent from last year, receiving 1.4 million inbound visitors, up 5 percent from last year.
