Merlin Entertainments Group will open its new attraction, Legoland Discovery Center, in Beijing next spring, and selected its first Master Model Builder through a Lego building competition on Tuesday.

The Legoland indoor family attraction will be added to the British family entertainment giant's new wave of expansion into the Chinese market. The group has already opened two attractions in China’s capital city: Madame Tussauds Beijing and Little Big City Beijing.

Beijing's Legoland Discovery Center will become the 21st in the world and the first Legoland in north China, following the successful 2016 launch of China's first Legoland Discovery Center in Shanghai. The new attraction will be located in Longhu Paradise Walk Shopping Center, a venue remote from central Beijing but close to the city's Tongzhou District, the new administrative sub-center of Beijing.

On Tuesday, Beijinger Wu Jianyu was chosen as the first Master Model Builder of the attraction after a fierce two-round competition held outside the unopened site. He beat out 14 other finalists due to his unique sense of model design as well as his ability to interact well with children.

According to Wang Rui, general manager of Merlin Entertainments Beijing, the Master Model Builder is the soul of the Legoland Discovery Center. His role is not only to educate and inspire children through creative play with Legos, but also to show parents how to play with their own children using Lego blocks.

The new Legoland Discovery Center Beijing will open in March and will comprise ten zones, including a 4D cinema, LEGOMINILAND models, recreational facilities and a host of other attractions.
