Your biggest choice is whether to base yourself downtown or at the Mingsha dunes. In the city you can pick from a range of moderately priced business hotels along with budget and higher end options. Out at the dunes, conditions are more bucolic, with Charley Johng’s a popular backpacker stop. Many guesthouses offer meals and some will also organize a night under canvas in the desert. Meanwhile if you are visiting Yangguan you might want to consider overnighting in a vineyard.

This 32,000-sqm landscaped four star hotel  has 500 beds including presidential rooms and deluxe suites. There are Chinese, Western and Japanese restauarants.

This reasonably priced hotel, ten minute’s walk from the Night Market, is also convenient for transport to major tourist sites in the Dunhuang area. The bus to Mogao stops 100m to the left of the hotel doors, while 100m to the right you can hop on a bus to Crescent Moon Lake. The hotel organises a special tourist bus service to Yadan.

Rooms at this supposedly four star establishment peak at above RMB1500 in high season but at other times can be booked for far less. The amenities include a health club, a Chinese restaurant and a coffee shop, and English speaking staff.

This branch of the popular Chinese mid-range hotel chain is conveniently located on Mingshan Road. On offer is solid comfort with reliable WiFi and hot water. Prices vary depending on season.

A budget option close by the Commercial Street and popular with young Chinese travelers. Beds in an eight-person dorm cost as little as RMB30, while a family room is about RMB200 depending on season. The hostel organizes a range of activities including camel hikes and bike rides, but language could be an issue for non-Chinese speakers.

This standard business class joint sits in the heart of the tourist area at the intersection of Mingshan Road and Western Road. From here it is a five minute stroll to the Night Market and Dunhuang Snack Street. There are two buildings: the main hotel; with a business centre and a small shop; and a nearby annex.

The cheerful yellow logo of this budget hotel chain is ubiquitous in many Chinese cities. Rooms usually cost around RMB200 a night, although they can be higher in peak season. For your money you get small but clean rooms with hot howers--watersand free WiFi.
