The first Silk Road (Dunhuang) International Cultural Expo, held between September 20 and October 10, has increased Dunhuang’s fame and influence and brought about leapfrog development in the city, said Zhan Shunzhou, secretary of CPC Dunhuang Committee, in an exclusive interview with China.org.cn.

Zhan spoke highly of the Dunhuang Speed in preparing for a wonderful event in just ten months. “We finished the construction of the convention center, the grand theatre, the international hotel and the T3 terminal of Dunhuang Airport in only eight months. The speed is so fast that it is praised as Dunhuang Speed, Dunhuang Miracle and Dunhuang Mode” said Zhan.

These infrastructure, while having guaranteed a successful cultural expo, will also serve the long-term development of the city, according to Zhan.

Dunhuang also underwent a major facelift because of the expo. Work done during a campaign to clean up the city’s physical appearance ahead of the expo amounted to all added up in the past decade. Efforts were also made to improve the quality of local citizens in terms of knowledge about the city’s history and culture, mastery of English and use of etiquettes.

The expo has also raised the sense of happiness of local residents. 33 supporting projects worth 2.236 billion yuan were carried out for the hosting of the cultural expo. These projects also mean enormous benefits for locals, as food safety tests have become more effective, the living environment and public facilities have been improved and medical equipment has been updated among other better public products and services.

The expo has made Dunhuang a more popular travel destination, said Zhan.

From June to October 7, the daily tourist arrivals at Mingshan Mountain and Yueya Spring scenic area stood above 30,000. It is estimated that by the end of this year, tourist arrivals in Dunhuang will increase 1.4 million year on year to 8 million.
