Tour of Celebrities' Residences in Shanghai

Every celebrity is an inspiring book to read and each residence has an intriguing story to tell. It is these residences where the joy and misery of the owners are accurately recorded in their dogged pursuit of glory and eternity. By visiting the residences of profound cultural legacy, people can readily appreciate the greatness, divineness and endlessness of the celebrities’ idea, belief, aspiration, value and motivation.

As China's largest metropolis in modern history, Shanghai was home to a galaxy of well-known figures including politicians, strategists, revolutionaries, writers, industrialists, etc. It is estimated that there are over six hundred former residences of celebrities in various times across the city, of which twenty-eight residences are listed as cultural relics under multi-level government protection.

Lu Xun Former Residence

Located at 9, DaLuXinCun, ShanYin Road, Hongkou District, Luxun's for former residence is a three-story building with red bricks and tiles in which Luxun lived from April 1933 till his death in October 1936. It was here where LuXun had written many revolutionary and satiric exposes. LuXun's former residence is a Shanghai Municipal Preserved Building.

Luxun Park

Situated in the northwest of LuXun Park, Mr.LuXun's Tomb is pain, grave and solemn and has been listed as a famous Cultural Unit under State Protection.

LuXu's Memorial Hall

LuXun's Memorial Hall is the first of its kind dedicated to a well-known figure after the founding of New China. On display are 200,000 articles which demonstrate the development of aspects of his revolutionary career, focusing on his ten-year social and cultural activities in Shanghai.

Wu Chang Shuo Memorial Hall

WuChangSuo was the leading figure of Shanghai-style painting in late Qing Dynasty, well established in motif and brush ink hues uniqueness. Once the director of Xiling Seal-engraving Society, Mr.Wu was known for carrying out archaic style in his rich and vigorous seal-engraving.

WuChuangShuo's Memorial Hall was completed and open to public in 1995 which has a large collection of Wu ChangShuo's works in painting, calligraphy and seal-engraving.

Tao XingZhi Memorial Hall

TaoXingZhi was an educator of the people, who devoted his life to combining teaching with application. He founded Xiaozhuang School, Yucai School, community college and produced a number of revolutionary figures. TaoXingZhi's Memorial Hall is a garden building in Anhui style covering an area of 3820 sq.meters. In the main hall there are inscriptions by MaoZeDong, ZhuDe, SongQingLing and FenYuXiang in memory of Mr.Tao.

Xu GuangQi Cemetery

Xu Guangqi, a native of Shanghai, was a scientist in Ming Dynasty who once served as the Minster of Rites and academician of Academy of Arts (Wenyuan Ge). He had all along been rigorous in the pursuit of studies and honest in performing his official duties. During all his lifetime he had conducted research in astronomy, calendar-making, water conservancy, surveying, mathematics and agronomy. He was the author of Complete Work on Agricultural Administration, Chung-Chen Astronomy Books and translated Elements, honored as the precursor of science in modern Chinese history. After his death he was buried at the convergence of Fahua Creek and Zhaojia Creek in Shanghai, where his offspring later settled, hence the name Xujiahui (gathering of Xu's family members).

Xu Guangqi's Cemetery is located inside Guangqi Park on Nandan Road in Xuhui District. It was restored in 1957 and listed as a key cultural relic unit under state protection by State Council in 1983.

Chen HuaCheng Memorial Hall

Chen Huacheng had served as chief military officer and local commander. When the British fleet invaded Wusong Fort in 1842, Chen Huangcheng at the age of 67 bravely led the resistance in defense of the position and died in battle. Chen Huangcheng's Memorial Hall is now a valuable education base designated for youngsters in Shanghai which houses the armor used by Chen Huangcheng, weapons, cannons. etc.

Huang Daopo Cemetry

Huang Daopo was an outstanding woman technical innovator of textile in ancient Chinese history. Covering an area of one mu, Huang Daopo's Cemetery was first built in Yuan Dynasty in front of which stands a granite tablet carved with the inscription by Wei Wenbo reading" Cemetery of Huang Daopo of Yuan Dynasty." In 1987 it was listed as a cultural relic unit under city protection.

Zhang Wentian Former Residence

Zhang Wentian's former residence is a brick-and-wooden structure with a sitting room and two wing rooms, yupical of rural house in the south of the Yangtze River. Over 300photos and more than 350 documents and articles are displayed in the 686-square-meter-large exhibition hall.

Sun Yatsen Former Residence

The grey two-storey garden-style mansion is where Dr.Sun Yatsen and his wife Madame Soong Chingling had lived and worked together from June 1918 till the end of 1924. After Dr.Sun Yatsen's death in March 1925, Madame Soong Chingling lived on here until 1937. With pine, camohor and cypress trees planted around, most of the objects in their original state. It was here where Dr.Sun Yatsen met Lenin's envoy Joffe and jointly released the famous Declaration of Sun Wen-Joffe. Many of his important works were completed here such as The Doctrine of Sun Wen, The Industrical Development of China, The First Steps for Democray. In 1961 the former residence of Dr.sun Yatsen's birth and death every year the commemorative meeting are attended by people from all walks of life in Shanghai.

Soong Ching Ling Former Residence

The former residence of Soong Chingling Honorary President of the People's Republic of China has the milk-wide boat-shaped, mansion in Western style as its main building. The display of the residence has been kept in the original state when Madame Soong Chingling was alive.

There are the presents of Chinese painting "galloping horses" from Xu Beihong and a huge res carpet from Mao Zedong. On the wall are a portrait of Dr.sun Yatsen and the photo of Soong Chingling with Mao Zedong. In the garage is a limousine from Stalin. The former residence of Soong Chingling is an important cultural spot under state protection.

Mausoleum

The commemorative facilities at Soong Chinglng's Mausoleum include Soong Family's Cemetery, Soong Chingling's statue, Soong Chingling's monument, etc. On Pure Brightness Festival each year the commemorative service is held here.

Li Bai Former Residence

Li Bai jointed the Red Army in 1930, came to Shanghai in 1937 and worked in this headquarters of the enemy for over ten years. He was arrested several times but showed his own safely, he telegraphed “extremely urgent" information one after another to the Party central committee. The former residence of late revolutionary martyr Li Bai was officially opened to the public in 1987 and is now Shanghai Municipal Preserved Building and the education base for youngsters of Shanghai.

Huang Yan Pei Former Residence

Mr. Huang Yanpei is a great patriot, loyal democratic fighter and precursor of China's vocational education. The exhibition of Huang Yanpei's career is divided into seven parts: childhood, youth, advocating against the Japanese invasion, long-standing friendship with Chinese Communist Party, a people's servant anf people in memory of Mr.Huang.

Former Residence of Mao Ze Dong

Mao Ze Dong is the great leader of Chinese people, a Marxist, great proletarian revolutionist, strategist and theorist, the chief founder and leader of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the People’s Republic of China.

The two-story house in old stone gate architectural style was the residence of Mao Ze Dong on his 9th trip to Shanghai for revolutionary activities in February, 1924. He was later accompanied by his wife Yang Kai Hui, her mother Xiang Zhen Xi and his two sons Mao An Ying and Mao An Qing from June to the end of the same year. On display are the daily items used by the Mao family restored to the original state.

Zhou En Lai Former Residence

Comrade Zhou Enlai was a great Marx-Leninist, an outstanding leader of the Party and nation, and one of the founders of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.

The three-story French styled mansion, covering an area of 850 square meters with a courtyard, was the former representative office of Chinese Communist Party delegation in Shanghai. In 1945 the Communist Party and the Nationalist Party formulated “the guidelines for peaceful country build-up”. The representative office was set up by the CPC delegation headed by Comrade Zhou En Lai in June 1946 as to carry out the following negotiations and united front work. Under the name of “General Zhou En Lai’s Residence” (abbreviated to “Sir Zhou’s Mansion”), the office was where Comrade Zhou En Lai held a number of press conferences and met with Chinese and foreign friends.

Zou Tao Fen Memorial Hall

Zou Tao Fen is a renowned correspondent, political critic and publisher.

The three-story house in modern style was the residence of Mr. Zou Tao Fen from 1930-1936. Some of his valuable manuscripts and works are displayed with the inscriptions of present-day leaders in memory of Mr. Zou.

Zhang Wentian is an outstanding proletarian revolutionary and theorist, faithful Marxist and important leader in a long history of CPC. The residence is a typically local country house of brick-and-wood structure with a living room and two chamber rooms, covering an area of 686 square meters. In the show room are over 300photos and 350 various materials and articles.

Chen Yun Former Residence

The former residence of Chen Yu is affiliated with memorial hall of Qingpu revolutionary history. Approved by the central government, it systematically sisplays the life of Chen Yun. It is named as "national patriotic education base". Situated on the north side of the main memorial hall, the residence is an old-style local country house of brick-and- wood structure. Covering a total area of 95.88 square meters, it is basically kept in the original state.

Cai Yuanpei Former Residence

Mr.Cai Yuanpei is a famed patriotic, democratic revolutionary and outstanding thinker and educator. He dedicated all his life to the cause of saving China through education and science, hence honored as" the prince of scholars and the model of people". The residence is a three-storey villa in English style. In 1937 Cai moved here and it became his last residence in Shanghai, the best preserved one in the country.
