Police nationwide are to start a seven-month-long crackdown on serious crime during the ongoing Shanghai World Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games due to open this November.

The crimes targeted include gun-related crimes, gang crimes, telecom fraud, abduction of women and children, pornography, gambling and drug crimes, Vice Minister of Public Security Zhang Xinfeng said at a video and telephone conference on Sunday.

China launched a nationwide campaign to crack down on gang crimes in February 2006. Police have investigated over 1,200 gang crime cases and arrested more than 8,900 people from February 2006 to September 2009, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
