The Cook Islands' participation in the World Expo is an "unprecedented opportunity" to deepen relations with China and other countries, Deputy Prime Minister Robert Wigmore said here Thursday.

"Although small and separated from China by ocean waters, our countries continue to make strong efforts to strengthen our ties of friendship and cooperation," he said at the National Day for the Cook Islands at World Expo 2010.

Wigmore said he would consult experts on how to attract and satisfy Chinese tourists. The Cook Islands will try to "ensure that Chinese visitors to our shores receive the best treatment possible and feel truly welcome."

The Deputy Prime Minister also sought to encourage pearl exports to China. "The Cook Islands cultivates the best black pearls in the world and has master craftsmen who create beautiful pieces."

Pearl farming is one of the Cook Islands' main focuses in boosting its economy amid the world economic downturn.
