China's president reaffirms support to UN

Invited by the Chinese government, Ban arrived in Shanghai on Saturday to start his China visit. Before coming to Beijing, he attended the closing ceremony of the Shanghai World Expo and delivered a speech at the Summit Forum there.

Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo also met with Ban Monday afternoon.

In meeting with Dai, Ban said the UN appreciates China's active participation in international affairs and hopes to improve cooperation with China.

He also expressed hope that all countries in the world would cooperate to for a peaceful world.

Dai said the UN played an irreplaceable role in upholding multilateralism and dealing with global challenges. China will, as always, actively support the work of the UN and the UN secretary general.

The state councilor also discussed with Ban on the international situation, UN's role and China's cooperation with it.

Dai said international situation has undergone big changes, including rapid growth of a large number of developing countries, increasing interdependence among nations and a faster transformation of world economic growth pattern.

The international system needs to adjust to these changes to increase the say of developing countries in international affairs and their representation in international organizations, Dai said.

Dai also said that China will continue to play a constructive role in maintaining peace, promoting development and democratization of international relations. China will shoulder its due international obligations.

Ban will meet with Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, on Tuesday.
