China’s biggest seawater desalination project is expected to finish construction in Qingdao at the end of 2011.

The Qingdao Baifa Seawater Desalination Project will begin trial operation at the end of 2011. It could produce as much as 100,000 tons of fresh water for residents in the city every day, said a source from the water supply department.

The city consumes an average of 600,000 tons of fresh water every day. Upon completion, the project could supply water to about 500,000 residents in the city and save more than 36 million tons of fresh water every year due to its high desalinating ability.
