Qingdao to control emission through int'l cooperation

Qingdao, a coastal city in Shandong Province, will make greater efforts to curb emissions of greenhouse gasses, introducing low-carbon technologies and enlisting help from the international community, a senior official with the municipal government told delegates at climate talks in Durban, South Africa.

Liu Mingjun, director of the Qingdao Development and Reform Commission, said an influx of rural laborers is expected to drive increased energy consumption in the city, but the municipal government will try to minimize emissions increases.

To achieve this goal, a number of measures will be taken, such as expanding regional natural gas supply, planting trees and introducing low-carbon technologies in the energy, manufacturing, building and transportation sectors.

Liu said the low-carbon development of Qingdao requires international support and cooperation, and more technology and other assistance are welcome.
