Since Qingdao is optimizing the industrial structure of marine economy, improving the development level of marine industry and the marine economic industry system being completed, now marine economy has become the main impetus for driving economic growth and upgrading of economic structure transformation.

Now, Qingdao has gradually formed a marine economy industrial structure consists of 18 industries includingmarine transportation, coastal tourism, marine equipment manufacturing, manufacturing of sea products and materials, marine biomedical industry and shipbuilding industry. In 2014, its total marine output increases 13.1% year-on-year, accounting for 20.2% of the total output.

With approval of “Blue Silicon Development Plan” and West Coast New District, a great number of institutions and universities gather in Qingdao. Among them, there are Blue Silicon brings in Qingdao National Marine Laboratory, National Deep Sea Base and Shandong University Qingdao Campus. Up till now, its core area has 12 marine research and development programs and 8 universities. By the end of 2014, 111 blue economic programs are under construction, business revenue of marine industry increases 18%. There are 14 national key programs in marine field whose chief scientists or host units are from Qingdao.
