The Grottoes of the Giant Buddha Temple are located in the Giant Buddha Village of Chengguan Town in Binxian County,Shaanxi province (nearby NO.312 Highway).It is one of the national cultural relic protection units and a during-A level tourist spot.The grottoes were originally built in 628 A.D.during the reign of the king LI Shimin in Tang Dynasty to commemorate the soldiers who died during the battle which happened in Binxian and it was called Yingfu temple originally. Later in the Northern Song Dynasty it was renamed as Qingshou Temple by the emperor Renzong to celebrate the birthday of his mother. Local people call it the Giant Buddha Temple because of the big buddha in it.
The grottoes was fascinated with the Qingliang Mountain in its south and Jing River in its north and a five-floor chamber standing in front of it.Along the 400-meter's cliff,there are130 caves,446 shrines and 1980 stone-carved buddhas with different sizes.They are divided into five parts;the Giant Buddha Grotto,the Grotto with a Thousand Statues,Arhat Grotto,Zhangba Buddha Grotto and the Dormitary Grotto.
The Grottoes of the Giant Buddha Temple are the biggest one in Shaanxi Provice and also they are the largest and the finest grottoes preserved from the early and the middle Tang Dynasty in China. The giant buddha in it is recognized as the biggest buddha both in Shaanxi Province and along the Silk Road.
