Located in Zhangzhou City's Nanjing County, Tianluokeng Village is famous for its Tulou cluster. The top level of these earth buildings have gun holes for defense against bandits. It consists of one square Tulou, three rounded Tulou and one elliptical Tulou. The square earth structure named Buyun building at the center was the first on this site, built in 1796. It has three stories and each floor has 26 rooms, four sets of stairs, and a circular corridor in front of the rooms. Hechang building is a three-storey, round earth building. Wenchang building has three stories with 32 rooms per floor, which was built in 1966. In spite of the earth wall, some structures are more than 700 years old, surviving a battering from the natural elements, including earthquakes, yet still solid.
