The voice dubbing of the characters is another draw. Li Yang, who has contributed his voice to popular cartoon characters such as Duck Donalds, and Monkey King, dubs his voice as the villain in this film.

Along with an authentic Chinese story and exquisite production value, the attractive voices are some of the key factors for "The King of Milu Deer" to be a great success. The animated feature took in 4-million yuan, or 570-thousand US dollars at the box office in just one week after release. And it won Best Animated Film at the thirteenth Hua Biao Film Awards announced at the end of August.

It went on to be nominated at the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Awards for the Best Animation Trophy.

Some say 2009 is a turning point for Chinese animation.

After US blockbuster "Kungfu Panda" made a great box office success in 2008, Chinese animation film makers seem to be inspired to come up with good films that use the resources from their own cultural roots.

At the beginning of 2009, the animated film "Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf" won a milestone box office for Chinese animation close to 100-million yuan. Then another made-in-China production, "Malan Flower", won acclaim from audiences during the summer season.

Now comes "The King of Milu Deer". It is a shot in the arm for made-in-China animation featuring animation with Chinese flavor, Chinese aesthetics, and Chinese culture.
