Sustainability is a word we often hear in this era of dwindling resources and global warming. At the annual 2009 World Design Congress in Beijing, senior students of the Central Academy of Fine Arts are displaying creations designed with harmony and sustainability in mind.

Featuring photography, animation, audio-video presentations, along with everyday articles, the Central Academy of Fine Arts show is a carnival of imagination, originality, and ingenuity. In their designs, the students go out of their way to make their creations practical and sustainable.

Yang Li, leading official of Central Academy of Fine Arts, said, “Beauty doesn't only mean a couple of paintings on the walls. It should be visible in every aspect of our life. It is the job of designers to combine art with everyday life. That will greatly enhance the quality of our life in the spiritual dimension.”

This project is titled Heal All. With its aromatic scent and soothing colors, it is intended to provide solace to the urban dwellers confronted with mental and psychological stress.

Bai Ming, student from Central Academy of Fine Arts, said, “In our modern society, harm is more often considered in the physical sense of the word. Actually, we should pay greater attention to the strains and injuries produced by psychological stresses. I hope my work will call attention to such emotional needs.”

Sustainability is a keyword at the show. Ingenious ways are created for converting what would otherwise be trash into articles of impressive utility. Designers also make efforts to boost the awareness of environmental preservation among the general public.
