As the producers of Riverdance know, the role of a production manager is often a crucial factor in the success of a concert or big event. To foster more Chinese talent in this field, a session of advanced training classes for concert tour and production managers was opened recently in Beijing.

The box office miracle of the Taiwan-based Superband could in part testify to the successful promotion and planning of the group's production managers. The fact that the four middle-aged men could still pull together a fervid crowd owes its success to the meticulous efforts by the China Arts and Entertainment Group. The company launched an intensive promotion since March 1st, setting up more than 200 ad's in Beijing subways. Ticket selling on the first day reached up to four-million RMB.

For such a crucial link in the entertainment business, the professional training system is currently lacking. And the incompetency of some managers can sometimes wreck a quality production.

He Jingfu, manager of Huachang Brothers, said, "Cultural industry is relatively new. And those in charge are limited in their understanding of relative policies, which in turn hampers the development of a company."

Liu Zhongkui, manager of Julong Culture Company, said, "As for market operations, people in this business need to learn from each other, and from the world, in terms of professional knowledge and marketing."

In light of the situation, an advanced training class has opened at Peking University. Prestigious personnel in showbiz circles from home and abroad as well as government officials have been invited to give lectures.

Zhang Yu, director of Beijing Trade Assn. for Performance, said, "I think the entertainment industry should open to talents from other fields, and secondly take professional training. The advanced classes have raised the general quality of the management staff. "

Apart from the training sessions, a complete system of education and regulation is also needed. The module is expected to facilitate the wholesome development of the cultural industry.
