James Cameron brings promotional tour in China

After all the waiting, the hype and anticipation - Chinese cinema-goers will be able to pop on their 3D glasses and visit Pandora. Audiences will be travelling to the planet, straight out of the imagination of director James Cameron, in cinemas as his sci-fi epic "Avatar" is unveiled around the world.

Hollywood director James Cameron brought his promotional tour for the 3D extravaganza, Avatar, to Beijing on Wednesday. At a news conference, he shared some behind-the-scene stories with local media.

The movie is set in the year 2154 on a far away moon called Pandora. Having depleted the earth's resources, earth wants to mine the planet for a rare, elusive mineral. By inhabiting avatars humans can explore the lush but otherwise toxic landscape of Pandora. The story follows a young paralyzed marine called Jake Sully who, through a twist of fate, finds himself infiltrating the Na'vi tribe and learning their spiritual ways.

James Cameron, the Oscar winning director of Titanic, first conceived of the film 15 years ago. By doing Avatar, he broke his own record of making the world's most expensive film. He tells Culture Express that his inspiration for the film came from his childhood hobby.

James Cameron said, "comic books...sci fi films..."
