The most expensive film until Avatar, Titantic revolves around a fictional romance story between two young lovers from different social classes who meet onboard the ship's maiden, and final voyage. Before production began, Cameron took dives to the bottom of the Atlantic and shot actual footage of the ship underwater, which are used in the final film.

Titanic became the highest grossing film ever made. The Computer Generated visuals surrounding the sinking and destruction of the ship are considered spectacular. Despite criticism during production of the film, it received a record-breaking 14 Oscar nominations, and won 11, including Best Director for Cameron.

Cameron disappeared from the big screen following Titanic. But he's making an overwhelming comeback with Avatar in 2009. Four years in the making, the film's his most expensive project to date. By January 8th, the 3-D blockbuster had already grossed a staggering 1.1 billion US dollars at the box office, overtaking Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King.

The film is now well on its way to challenging the 1 point 8 billion US-dollar- record which Cameron set with Titanic.
