A Haitian man has been brought to a University of Miami field hospital. Doctors say he may have survived for almost four weeks under the earthquake rubble.

According to Dr. Dushyantha Jayaweera, a Haitian family brought the 28-year-old man to the field hospital early on Monday.

They said the man had been buried under a marketplace during the earthquake. Villagers discovered him when they were digging at the market site.

Dr. Jayaweera said that the family's assertions could not be confirmed, but the man's condition suggested the story could be true.

Dr. Dushyantha Jayaweera said, "I don't know the longest a person has lived like that, but we cannot confirm anything because we go by the history but, by the history, he seems to have been like that, but he was quite dehydrated and he was wasted so there are certain things that suggest that it's true."

Dr. Jayaweera said he was optimistic about the man's condition.

Dr. Jayaweera said, "We evaluated him, we gave I.V. (intravenous) fluids, we checked the labs and we decided to transfer the patient to our intensive care unit and he's doing reasonably well now."

The survivor's mother said her son had been working at the market when the quake occurred. She had believed the man had been killed.
