A robot designed to learn like a child, is getting a new set of legs and smaller hands. The iCub is the result of a European collaborative project studying human development.

Professor Darwin Caldwell of the Italian Institute of Technology, one of the universities developing the iCub, said they modelled the robot on a human because we are able to do so many different jobs.

Professor Darwin Caldwell said, "We want to be able to design robots which can do those jobs but we don't necessarily have to design them in exactly the same way. So the limbs in the robot are made from metal because metal happens to be the convenient material,"

The project is funded by the European Union, and involves a combination of different sciences.
