Drill marks World Red Cross Day in Yushu

In Yushu county, World Red Cross Day has taken on a special meaning this year, as the region recovers from last month's devastating quake. An earthquake emergency rescue drill has been conducted to mark the occasion.

Zhang Yin, CCTV Reporter, said, "May 8th is World Red Cross Day. People from across the world held different kinds of activities to mark the occasion. In Yushu, armed police and rescue workers conducted an emergency rescue drill in the quake hit region.

The drill was organized by the Armed Police Hydropower Engineering Troops and the Chinese Red Cross Society 's local branches. 40 armed police and 20 rescue workers from Hunan and Qinghai participated in the drill. It includes: on-site search and rescue as well as medical emergencies.

Peng Lifu, Vice Chairman of Hunan Red Cross Society, said, "At this special moment and place, we cooperate with the Qinghai Red Cross Society, Yushu Red Cross Society and the Armed Police Hydropower Engineering Troops to conduct such an emergency rescue drill. It is of great significance for future rescue work and popularizing knowledge of Red Cross Health Care."

Also in Yushu, a medical team from the 309 PLA hospital, held a ceremony, delivering medication to a local village in the quake hit county. The fresh supplies will meet the needs of locals for one year.
