Toyota has announced a recall of about half a million cars, due to a variety of quality issues. The affected models are sold mainly in the U.S. and Japan.

The recall covers Avalon sedans from the year 2000 to 2004 and Lexus SUVs from 2003 to 2007. The recalled Avalons may have faulty steering locks, caused by improper casting of the steering lock bar that can cause cracks to form. The Lexus LX 470 has a different steering shaft problem, which could cause loss of steering control. Toyota says three unconfirmed accidents linked to the Avalon have been reported, with no injuries.

Toyota's subsidiary, Daihatsu, is also recalling two minivan models, due to missing or loosened suspension bolts. Toyota's latest recall indicates the automaker is still struggling to overhaul quality control.
