Heavy rain over the past two days has damaged Leiyu Road in Beichuan County, Sichuan Province, isolating 12 towns and villages. Around 60 cars and more than a hundred passengers are stranded.

This road is the only road to the outside world for nearly 80 thousand people.

Rainfall in two villages along the road has reached up to 15 centimeters.Heavy rain has also triggered landslides, cutting off the road which only reopened in late last month.

Around 50 thousand cubic meters of rock and mud are blocking Leiyu Road, and a six kilometer long stretch has been destroyed, blocking culverts and paralyzing traffic.

A trapped driver said, "The road ahead and behind are both cut off, The cars are stuck in the middle, it's impassable. "

Local government has called in heavy machinery to clear the rubble.

Zhao Yunshu, Deputy Director of Beichuan Transport Bureau, said, "The rain and flooding have made rescue efforts difficult. We will get to work as soon as the flood recedes a little."

The isolated villagers have enough food supply to last about a week.
