The close orbit is to survey potential landing sites for Chang'e 3. The spacecraft will maintain the orbit for over 2 days.

"First we will test the CCD camera at the altitude of 15 kilometers, and adjust the parameters accordingly. Then when the satellite enters the Bay of Rainbows area, pictures will be taken with definitions showing detail down to 1 meter." Said Zhou Jianliang.
