Indonesia's most dangerous volcano erupted once again Wednesday afternoon, following a morning blast. The explosion sent searing gas clouds and burning rocks down its scorched flanks.
The first eruption early Wednesday began around 8am local time. Spewing gas and rocks were sent down the mountain's slopes. No casualties have been reported in the blasts.
Thousands of people living along Merapi's slopes have been evacuated to government-run camps well away from the base.
Villager Sukemi said, "What is really needed right now, except basic sanitation, are food and goods for our children, like some snacks."
Indonesia's President came to visit displaced people at one camp. He is praising the work of authorities for providing shelter and medical help to those in need.
Indonasian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said, "Local governments worked hard, prepared everything, shelter, medical facilities and other needs. I hope everyone will obey what is conveyed by the government."
Merapi has killed 38 people in the last week and several international flights have been cancelled due to the dark ash.
Displaced villager Widi Karyono said, "We have enough food and drink but we can't work to earn money."
The latest eruptions come as the country's struggles from an earthquake generated tsunami that devastated a remote chain of islands last week.
Volcanologists believe Mount Merapi will continue to spew out for weeks, or possibly months.
