With just a day to go before the Guangzhou Asian Games, final preparations are being made. What will be the highlights be, and what have authorities done to downplay security concerns?

As big events go, fireworks are usually the most impressive part of the opening ceremonies. The Asian Games is no exception. Guangzhou is expected to give a firework show that will surpass both the Beijing Olympics and Shanghai Expo. But there is one mystery about the opening ceremony.

Mr. Zhao Weiping, Vice- Supervisor of firework display, said, "The firework installed at the Guangzhou Tower will display a Chinese character to show Guangdong culture and speciality. The character will be several hundred meters high. It is so big we have notified the people from Guiness Book of World Records."

What is the character? We will have to wait for the mystery to be unraveled tomorrow.

Besides the opening ceremony, preparations are also ongoing in other fields.

Guangzhou authorities are imposing tighter security checks.

At the Baiyun Airport, a new policy requires all passengers to take off their shoes. After that, they must receive another inspection. All security gates are opened to offset the prolonged check.

Guangzhou authorities are also implementing the supervision of some water routes. Four sites are being set up in an industrial area. 19 vessel are also being deployed on the water where the decorated boat parade will take place.

The forecast calls for light rain for tomorrow evening's opening ceremony.
