China's Tianhe-1A computer system has hit the top spot on a list of 500 of the world's fastest supercomputers. It replaces the US Cray XT5 Jaguar system at the number one position.
The Tianhe-1A is located at the National Supercomputer Center in Tianjin. It registered a performance of 2.57 "petaflops" per second, around 1.4 times faster than the former champion. One petaflop indicates a thousand trillion operations per second. The Chinese built Nebulae, formally the world's second fastest supercomputer, has dropped into third place.
