While spectacular to observe, NASA scientists say the solar storm is confined to the Sun, and poses no threat to satellites in space or power grids here on Earth.

Launched by NASA on February 11th, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the Sun.
