Two of China's time-honored brands have opened galleries of their own. One is the Wang Zhihe fermented bean curd, a popular and delicious snack. The other is the famous Wang Mazi scissors. The new lease of the old brands carries an ambition to pass the legacy to the younger generation.
It's the rarely heard hawking of a grinder of knife and scissors wending across streets. Take a visit at the newly-opened gallery of the famous scissors's brand Wang Mazi, you can easily get the memory back, if you once lived in China 30 years ago or long before that.
You are welcomed to sharpen your scissors here, for a cost of 5 yuan each. The live demonstration is accompanied with a collection of historical scissors and photos, an attempt to display the history of the famed brand dating back to the end of Ming Dynasty some four hundred years ago.
Also opening a gallery to the public is the traditional brand Wang Zhihe fermented bean curd, still a popular snack on many dinner tables. In early Qing Dynasty, more than three hundred years ago, Wang Zhihe, a native from eastern Anhui province came to Beijing to take part in the national examination. Though with an academic failure, Wang accidentally invented the tasty fermented bean curd when he opened the jar of left tofu he saved with salt and spices.
